Busy Weekends

posted by Tach at 11:29 AM
Three big things to talk about today! Let's get to it.

We had a great visit with my nephew Vincent this past week. We first took him to the California Science Center for the Superhero exhibit. It was pretty neat, and he got to jump around and play with all sorts of wierd stuff- my favorite was the Iceman hands- giant ice blocks. The real fun was putting your hands on the ice, and then running over to the infrared camera to see them all black in the screen. Awesome. They had a photo op for kids, while lifting a car. However, they didn't really tell you about it, and it became more a photo of me standing in front of him while he lifted with all his 8 year old might. Eh, what do you want for free, right?

Last Friday, Mac and I took him to Disneyland. It's become sort of a ritual now, and we're really glad to have something we can do with the kids that's just us. My family likes Disney, but Mac and I are really into the parks, so it's only fair we get to share it with my nephews and neices. Soon to be hers too. Heh. Yeah, "Auntie Mac". Scary as that is, we kinda like it.

We had a great day with him. He went on many rides for the first time- Space Mountain was such a hit, he MADE us go on again, braving the 30 minute stand by line. He also got a great kick out of the Matterhorn and the Mansion. We could not get him on Pirates, though. He went on it years ago, during his first visit when he was 4, and it apparently scarred him pretty bad. He's convinced the first drop is nightmarishly steep and completely pitch black, and he will NOT contemplate getting on. We teased him about it for awhile, but he wouldn't budge. Oh well. Maybe next time he'll be old enough to be over it.

Nevertheless, we had a fantastic day with the boy. He got a bit grouchy at dinner time, and when it was time to go home, but for the rest of the day, he was a lot of fun. Can't wait to see him and his brothers and sisters at Christmas. Woo!

We took Saturday to relax and recover, as Sunday was the infamous Bat's Day. Yes, that time of year when hundreds upon hundreds of black clad, made-up, disaffected folks climb out of their coffins, hiss at the sunlight, and make their way to Disneyland to enjoy the day and scare the straights. This year was no exception.

Mac looked fantastic in her new red corset. I mean fanTASTic. Wow. Yeah. Anyways.

We met up with Darcia and her little sister for lunch at the redone Cafe Orleans. Our friend Jay managed to join us as well. It was a good time, and the food was pretty good. I'm glad they switched to table service there, as it's a great alternative to French Market, especially when you can't get into Blue Bayou without reserving days or weeks in advance.

After our meal, we headed to the Castle for the 1pm photo shoot. Along the way, we met up with Heather and Laura, Dave and Jamey, and finally, we ran into Michael and Rae. After a brief chat with everybody, we got a group photo with Sleeping Beauty, and then proceeded to the main photo op. It didn't seem as big as last year, or as well organized. We were in the back, and most likely weren't visible in the pic. We'll find out, I suppose.

After the photo, we split off from the main group, and went to cool off in the Tiki Room. We ran into Deb, Dave and Elizabeth there. After a few rides and amusing moments, we decided that heading to DCA would be fun, as Claire wanted to ride the Tower. So, we skipped across the street, and did a quick photo op with Creulla De Vil on the way. We got on in quick time, and did the usual funny gag for the ride picture. It's hard to come up with ideas that we haven't done already. Being dead is only funny once or twice.

We enjoyed some chili cheese fries, and then hit Screamin'. Sounds worse than it was. Nobody hurled.

Someone, I don't remember who (maybe Elizabeth) suggested we venture into Bug's Land. I'd never actually ridden anything there, so we all tromped over to Heimlich's Chew-Chew Train. Oh, ye gods. I'll never get the image out of my head. It's there, burrowing ever deeper, like some sort of sadistic parasite- filling my mind with images of half eaten cupcakes and animal crackers. And the smells... oh, lord, the smells.

We left the land of California behind to head back to the Magic Kingdom. We got in line for Pirates (as we had missed it on Friday) and conversed about the changes that were made to DL's and WDW's versions. We all laughed when Darcia got hit on by this goth/punk girl. Okay, she didn't get hit on, but the sheer amount of stares she got because of her top was funnier than hell. This chick staring at her for 10 minutes in line before talking to her just put it over the top.

After Pirates, we moseyed up to the Gallery, said 'sup to Jimmy, and ordered a print for Darcia's birthday present. Ran into Genghis & Bernice. We don't see them often enough. Not fair.

We made the line for the 8pm Mansion meet- which by that time was over by the entrance to French Market. It was huge. Finally, we got to head up, and within about 20 minutes, were in the queue. Flash pictures were aplenty then, I'm surprised we can still see without spots.

I was named number 843 in line, out of how many, I'm not sure. Of course, halfway up, I had to split ranks and run to get the print before the Gallery closed. No worries, but I did manage to annoy quite a few goths on my way back through the queue. Fun.

Greatest quote of the night came out of it, though. Passing through a small group, a girl said, "You're probably the only person in this park who HASN'T seen my tits." Of course, I couldn't let that go...

I stopped, turned and said, "Don't worry buddy, I haven't either. Don't feel alone."

It did get a laugh, and I moved on. Better not wait around for anything that might get me hit. Of course, that did mean I wouldn't get to see them if she did show 'em off. Why not? Some girl did last year. (missed that photo op, too)

I made my way back up, and did meet up with the crew finally. We laughed at my amusing anecdotes about free shows and the sight of goths behaving badly, until we got to the foyer, barely made the photo, and were swept into the Mansion itself. One trip through, and we went on our way. It had been a pretty full night, so we said our goodbyes, and went on our way.
I gotta say a big thanks to Darcia, Jay, and the Poos for making it a great day. Much fun. Photos are up in the Gallery. Enjoy them.

Anyways. Last bit for this update.

Last week, I received an e-mail from a rep at Dagens Nyheter, the biggest newspaper in Sweden. Apparently, they were going to run a story about Snakes on a Plane, and they wanted to run my comic alongside as an example of the online hype.

WOW.

I'd never even considered anything like that. After mulling it over for about an hour, I responded in the positive. Hey- even in Sweden, publicity is publicity! Well, today, they ran the article here: http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?a=566152

It's in Swedish, and I dunno if there's translation software to view it in English, but the result is the same. I'm worldwide, baby. So, welcome people of Sweden! I hope you enjoy your stay with FlannelJedi.com, and please, tell your friends!

All this has pushed my button to get a bit more creative with the comic and the site. So keep your eyes peeled. More to come.
